When was the last time that you went to a themed party? And no, Halloween parties certainly do not count. If you answer is grade school and it involved paper Batman plates, then we feel sorry for you. Themed parties are a blast and if your friends aren’t hosting them, you need to. Now that we have convinced you, the biggest challenge is to figure out the perfect theme for your party, but luckily for you, we have some ideas on that.
Toga Party
Ah, the toga theme. A tried and true classic that has appeared in countless college-age movies – you know, like Animal House. Tell your guests that if they aren’t wearing a toga, then they aren’t getting into the party. You have to decorate appropriately, of course. We recommend lots of gold accents and some massive chalices to drink from.
Ugly Christmas Sweater Party
Perhaps the trendiest style of themed party, the ugly Christmas sweater theme literally never gets old. Tell your guests to find the ugliest, most absurd Christmas sweaters they can find and hold a contest to see who found the best one. You can decorate the house for this party, but aside from some colorful lights and a fake Christmas tree, you don’t really need much. The entertainment is in the clothes.
Bring Back the 80s
The 1980s was an insane time for fashion, with crimped hair, tons of bangles, and the brightest neon colors you have ever seen. The fun thing about the 80s theme is that people can choose to dress in the style of the time or they can dress like a celebrity – Madonna and Billy Idol are obvious (and popular) choices. Create a playlist of nothing but 80s pop music so your friends can dance the night away. And extra points if you rent a projector and screen popular 80s movies – like Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and The Breakfast Club– on a white wall or a sheet.
Fiesta!
For something a little more food centric – because food makes everything better – you should think about hosting a Mexican fiesta. Decorate the space with bright colors and make sure to put out plenty of chips and guacamole for your guests – or, you know, go all out and get taco truck. You can set up a tequila tasting bar and get one of your more responsible friends to blend up some margaritas. Just don’t forget the piñata for the big finisher. It is not a fiesta until you get to hit a cardboard donkey with a bat for candy.
Prom Night
Most people’s prom nights were fairly lackluster and unforgettable, and some had a downright awful time. If you and your friends have been talking about how much fun it would be to redo your prom nights, you should turn it into a themed party and invite everyone. Guests need to get all dolled up for the big night, but even better if they dress according to the styles that were big when their real prom was. Let’s say your prom was in the early 2000s, so pull out those polos (pop the collar, of course) and work in an unnecessary scarf for no reason at all.
Pool Party
If you are lucky enough to have a pool, you have no reason at all not to throw a pool party for your friends. After all, the tried and true class will never do you wrong. The year 2017 is definitely the year of the swimsuit, with so many different styles and colors completely on trend. Basically, if you feel good in it, rock it. You can even make your pool party a body positive one and encourage all of your friends to step out of their comfort zones and have fun! Make sure to get plenty of inflatable pool floaties though, because it isn’t a proper pool party until people are floating around on giant blow-up swans, donuts and unicorns. Also, make sure to have plenty of snacks and drinks, as well as a good outdoor speaker that can withstand getting a little wet. Want something to cover up in? Grab some fun Hawaiian shirts and keep the tropical vibe going.
