GAIL (India) Limited is an athletics program which is conceived on a grassroots, GAIL-Indian Speedstar that aims to unearth young talents across the entire nation. On 22nd March, 2016, GAIL (India) Limited and National Yuva Cooperative Society (NYCS), has embarked this initiative GAIL Indian Speedstar at the Constitution Club of India, New Delhi.
National Yuva Cooperative Society has collaborated with Anglian Medal Hunt Company as its Technical Partner for The GAIL Indian Speedstar project. The prolonged, significant era attempt earlier has been highlighting on grassroots program in order to create a pool of athletes with flair that is likely to bring pride for India in track events at the highest rank of sporting spheres – the Olympics 2020/2024.
The reason behind launching this initiative is to identify, pick and nurture the hidden talent in athletes. The targeted age group lies between 11 – 17 years in 100m, 200m and 800m track events across.
A panel of esteemed sportspersons such as, P.T Usha, AnuradhaBiswal, Rachita Mistry, and Kavita Raut has been hired in the selection committee for supporting selections and guiding coaching camps. Their primary role would compromise to create the selection criteria or the GAIL-Indian Speedstar program, and to develop the training module for the chosen athletes at the National Level.
Apart from the organizers Dr. Ashutosh Karnatak, the initiative has been launched by none other than the legendary athlete P.T. Usha.

Under the keen supervision of selectors and coaches, district trials were conducted and have been appointed by the selection committee. Athletes were picked on the basis of talent identification and the selection criteria adopted by the committee.
Initial trials were conducted earlier this year at 55 districts across 10 states which involved the participation of more than 25,000 children out of which 850 children made it to the State level.
Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, Hon. Minister of State (I/C) Petroleum and Natural Gas, AnuradhaBiswal, Dutee Chand, and Purnima Hembram were the selected ambitious young athletes from Bhubaneswar, Odisha. 14 children overall have been qualified for the National level trials while Shri Dharmendra Pradhan ji, motivated and applauded the selected candidates for National level trials
Camp and Selection:
The first State level camp and trial was organized on 27-28th of February in SawaiMaan Singh Stadium, Jaipur which involved the participation of 60 boys and girls out of which 4 have qualified for the next level. The state trials were held in Odisha (14 Selection), Kerala (28 Selection), Delhi (28 Selection), and Jharkhand (4 Selection) followed by Gujarat and Maharashtra in the last week of April. The shortlisted children from the State trials will then be participating in the National camp and selection is scheduled to be held in May 2016 at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi.
Now the shortlisted athletes from the state trials would be attending a rigorous national level camp. And the final trials would be held while concluding the coaching camp. Winners are going to be selected on the basis of the qualification criteria and their potential. The winners are to be given a rigorous training throughout the year. The top 9 athletes will then make it to a top-of-the-line coaching for over a period of 5 years where the ultimate objective of one of these athletes would be to represent India at the Olympics.
