That was the sole reason of the existence of lingerie in olden times. There are evident archives available that portray the usage of corsets on teenage girls to flatten their bust-line. Mothers used to tame their daughters by tying dart-sewn bustiers over their newly grown curves even at the level of cruelty. Elizabethan and Victorian era state numerous stories where young girls remained sick for years, and later  couldn’t lactate when became mothers just because of suffocating bustiers and corsets.
