Dream

Dreams Though perennial, theirs was a fleeting love affair,“Where art thou? Please come back. I’m scared.”The frightened little girl sobbed, looking for himIn a vast edifice, akin to an ancient Roman Colosseum! She was recklessly searching for him lost in a labyrinthAs always he vanished and she kept on screaming‘Yes! It’s you! I know it’s you! She conferredwith the side contours of his visage before he disappeared… I jerked, opened my eyes all soaked in sweat, and screamedThe little girl was my confrère in sleep in my amicable dreamAsleep but not oblivious of the unslept, unsleeping, elsewhereLost in the labyrinth of life was none other than my father! I saw the dream in monochrome hues as alwaysColorless, in all possible shades of blacks, whites, and greysA dream of him..pleasing yet unpleasant, unslept unsleepingA dream within my kinetic dream was sprawling! He thawed my frosty self in those frigid wintersMollified my…

Blue for Autism Awareness

A Rose is a Rose is a Rose is a Rosewhether it’s red, pink, or blueGod made us in shades of VIBGYORand told us to live those hues. The azure of the sky I’ve seen in your eyesturned deep cerulean in your heartYou sipped those blues like Shiva’s Venomwhich tints your bits and parts. Ah Christ! They nailed your hand and feetand left them blued and bruisedThe flush of deep blue on Krishna’s facemake your demeanor abstruse. It hurts to see when you know everythingyet, can’t express and stammerIt pains to see when a new rose is pluckedand forced its petals to scatter. Let’s repel them who are blind to the bluesburied in your abraded scarsTheir hearts may be carved of gold and gemsTheir eyes, though filled with tar!! ??? The phrase “A rose is a rose is a rose is a rose” is derived from… Gertrude Stein’s famous poem…

Ars Poetica poems

Ars Poetica (The Art of Poetry): A Sonnet When heart bleeds Aqua RegiaSolvates your inner spaceWhen Brine is tinged with liquid painWhich sets papers ablaze. When soul cracks in screeching silenceThere’s bloodcurdling solaceThen poems write themselves with painPen scrolls mere roses, lace. When agony drills you deep downYet, you don’t show its traceWhen pain seeps in, poems spill outIt aches what you embrace. Art’s as pure as the driven snowFinesse adds to its grace. _______________________________________________________________ Glossary: :*Aqua Regia:– A mixture of concentrated nitric and hydrochloric acids, a highly corrosive liquid which dilutes precious metals ie. gold and platinum.*Brine: Salty water ( here, tears).________________________________________________________________ Unlike a classic Shakespearean sonnet written in ‘Iambic Pentameter‘,  I have written this sonnet with a specific rhyme and rhythm pattern using the Common meter often used in lyrical poetry, especially in Christian hymns and Wordsworth’s Romantic Poetry. The common meter, which is also called the “Ballard…

Time 's Cadence

Time leaves all behindon the sepia pages of bygone wynds What was saved from those burning infernoscomes out victorious from the ordeals of time. I held those classic fragments of the yorelanded on my heart, coeval with the crimson bosom of times,The fragments, so ugly coldrife, forsoothwhich, initially, seemed glossy in my dreams.  What ended, ended…Nathe-less, I am hitherto holding it close to my essence,I slaughtered my dreams on the altar of timeand kept my past alive, perennial, in my conscience.   Should I drag the chilled carcass of my past till tomorrowand blame the sorrows which came along? My past and sorrows, as inseparable as if caged in wedlock, how skillfully they kill each other like diphthongs! Each of my sorrows waited for a new morrowfor their Ecdysis…to be rejuvenated in a jocund tomorrow,Today is that morrow, laced with my overtly oxidized pasttinged with those russet-pink sorrows. Stale they are, but happy…

राग मल्हार

Deibhidhes is an approximation of the Irish Gaelic poetry form. The actual form needs quatrains made up of lines of only seven syllables each where the last stressed syllable of the first line rhymes with the last unstressed syllable of the second line , and the same pattern to be repeated in the third and fourth lines , with the additional requirement of two alliterative rhyming words in the middle of the third and fourth lines. No restriction on total length of the poem. It’s a Hindi version of Irish Gaelic Deibhidhe Poem.

Desideratum , Daya Shankar Mishra, Advocate

Desideratum, the Tawny Teak Chair…   I was decluttering my house of those amassed memories… Worn out clothes, broken toys, torn books… And some dried flowers buried in those senile dairies… All that’s passé collected through years while I was vindicating my soul Then, I thought of cleaning the debris of my heart as well.   Sitting so calm on your tawny brown teak chair, You stopped me, your daughter. You said, it’s your father’s reminiscence, It holds true as a slice of heirloom, an inheritance. A hundred years old, timeless and perennial… Not merely paraphernalia.. Not only a furniture, a piece of timber “It will be there when I am gone”, What you said, I still remember.   How you told me to retain all the memories, all wounds And I am keeping them hitherto close to my heart. All the clutter that’s faded and aged Aged more…

Open Your Lips and Sing

Open your lips and sing When Nótus blows in a baritoneBirds are songsters of spring,When Zephyr eddies in a sopranoCome, open your lips and sing ! . When autumn leaves fall in falsetto Queen bee quaffs with her sting, The lone Moon laughs in his languor Just open your lips and sing ! . When Nyx drops off in her darkly drape Dewdrops turn in jasmines, With the Vaudeville of Venusian arts Just open your lips and sing ! . My symphonies spurt in new Sonnets Come! Sing with your songstress !     — ?angeeta ?ishra _____________________________________________________   Glossary: Nótus : Greek god of the south wind associated with the desiccating hot wind.  Baritone : A type of classical male singing voice which is considered heavy sounding.Zephyrus : Greek god of the west wind, the gentlest of the windsSoprano : The highest singing voice of a woman or a…

CONVOCATIONS

CONVOCATIONS…An Elegy… My poem is the literal representation of Sufjan Stevens‘s instrumental music album, CONVOCATIONS, released about a month ago which is his musical homage to his deceased father and also, to all the lives lost during the pandemic, COVID 19. My poem is written in the memory of my sister, late Vineeta Mishra who lost her battle with leukemia in January 2020. This Elegeia is my tribute to the heavenly soul on her birthday, today on the 10th of June.   CONVOCATIONS   One And a half years ago… Gathered beneath that garish awning Spread under the vast expanse of the misty sky Those hundreds of smirking faces, exhibiting etiquette All dressed in flashy apparels, talked about the food served. As observances were meant to satiate you, with each of the morsels they ate and relished. Even the crows cawing the most clamorous songs were called and fed. Though,…

Covid 19

# Covid 19 and The Last Kuru King : A Roseate Sonnet Adorning Kalki on his crown, he bore the sins of his progenitors, Insects were restricted in Parikshit’s abode, he was too cautious. The last Kuru King was cursed to die snake-bitten within days seven, He stayed recluse fiend forefended in a home no less than heaven. . Tempted, on the seventh day, he tried to eat a fruit, punctured, A tiny insect appeared, metamorphosed in Snake king, Takshak. Kalki reinforced the curse, king was snake-bitten, died, Just a little aperture made a curse flourish, fertile. . Eons later, reincarnates again, Takshak the Serpent King, Kalki holds the leash of death, lets us taste fruit of our sins. . Remorselessly, Kalki is yet in our crowns, wronging our ilk innate, Obituaries rain like those fecund tears, Iravati, the widow shed. Sins, be ours or our ancestors’ have flourished in…

When the angels danced

When The Angels Danced On Their Heads: A Greek Folklore Amidst the stillness of eternal night on Mount Olympus, Euterpe stood aghast before her father, King Zeus. The muse of Lyrics and Music was dethroned of her glory, One amongst the nine Mousai, merely a subject to mockery. Her misdemeanor was loving a demon feigning as a demigod, Her dexterity fell short of deciphering all his frauds. Riding on the black clouds, impersonating a prince, The demon knew how to entice and hold a princess’ strings. Euterpe lost her head and heart over that Dementor, She couldn’t see the devil behind his princely demeanour. The smitten Muse wrote and sang a million Serenades, Effervescent and honeyed love divulged as Sorbets. Oblivious was she until one fine day it rained, The night turned catastrophic, she saw his visage, stained. The black cloud he used to ride was, Harpy, the necromancer, Pouring…
