Women’s Lib & the History of Lingerie

Indian Bloggers

Bible says “body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you”, if so, then why a woman should be ashamed of her body? Since ancient times a women’s body was considered to be an object of desire and it was always expected that women feel shame and disgust about their curves. That was the sole reason of the existence of lingerie in olden times. There are evident archives available that portray the usage of corsets on teenage girls to flatten their bust-line.

Mothers used to tame their daughters by tying dart-sewn bustiers over their newly grown curves even at the level of cruelty. Elizabethan and Victorian era state numerous stories where young girls remained sick for years, and later  couldn’t lactate when became mothers just because of suffocating bustiers and corsets.

Then came the medieval era— the era of renaissance and women’s lib, where the revolution among women provoked them to shun their lingerie. That ‘no-inner-movement’ was yet again an extremist approach towards feminism as it again led ladies to serious health issues like back pain, sagging and many more such problems.

Gone are those days when women used to be ashamed of their bodies as ‘the new woman of today’ is indeed aware of her feminism and not at all conscious about her curves. Rather, she is quite comfortable in her skin and body. The woman of substance is audacious enough to celebrate the provocative state of her mind and the curvaceous state of her body. So, here comes the role of right lingerie for a woman who is capable of making right choices— the lingerie that is chic yet comfortable, stylish yet sensuous, classy yet sassy and seductive yet economic.

  • Hehe, Thanks dear, “Dridhti” deserves “The Boldest Blog” tag. Love you too. 🙂 <3

  • I’m so glad that you find this post a well written one. And yes, I intentionally missed that part of 70’s women’s lib, as I haven’t mentioned any lingerie names in the post, considering the fact that people of all age groups are reading this, specially young girls. As I thought they shouldn’t feel hesitation while going through the post.

So, the post is though bold yet a little demure.
Thank you so much for your valuable comment. Means a lot. 🙂

  • Great review done and bold lines there!
    Well done Maitreni.

  • Haha, Thanks Archana. Well, it seems team TSS is becoming a bit bold and trying to touch the provocative edge, the very “Drishti” way. 🙂

  • The way you have introduced the concept in the beginning is great…not just coming straight to the point.

I agree women these days know how to make heads turn, and why not…if you got it, flaunt it (not in the negative sense though)!

    • Thank you so much. I’ve written it to be more like reading stuff rather than being mere a website review. Well, you’re right, not in the negative sense. Agreed. 🙂

  • I didn’t know of the medical problems that the olden days’ corsets were associated with.

Btw, Zivame really seems to have changed the way a good part of India shops for lingerie, hasn’t it?

  • Purba Chakraborty

Great review, dear! Zivame is quite a nice destination for lingerie shopping. The facts that you stated in the beginning made this article perfect 🙂
