Carrot juice is what all mothers and grandmothers recommended for their little ones so that they have an impeccable eyesight. It became such a norm in households, that most of us actually believed it to be true, not only for normal eyesight, but also for night vision. All said and done, growing up makes people question things, so a primary question to have arisen is whether carrot juice actually helps eyesight or not. They answer is, yes they do!
The Science
Carrots have something called beta carotene, which is basically another form of vitamin A. This is essential for having a good eyesight. Vitamin A helps convert light to a kind of signal which can be transmitted to the brain. In extreme cases, where there is a high deficiency of vitamin A, corneas of the eye get damaged altogether which can severely hamper eyesight. Deficiency of vitamin A indeed causes blindness of several children all over the world.
So the next time your parent or grandparent uses this tactic to get you to drink carrot juice, don’t shun her from using the juicers. The natural source is far healthier than supplements, which many kids have to take, especially in countries like Nepal and India where the deficiency is common. Destroying the key component of our eyes, called photoreceptors, due to the low intake of vitamin A can prove to be very harmful for you in the long run.
Other Benefits
While eyesight is a key issue that carrots help with, there are several other added benefits too. Vitamin A, C and E are essential for a healthy living. Together they not only help other body parts, but also prevent factors like macular degeneration and cataract in the eyes. These vitamins also have other uses, like Vitamin C is essential for keeping cough and cold at bay.
Are Only Carrots Enough?
No, just carrots will not drive away every eyesight issue that you may be facing. Treatment administered by oneself and diet supplements are not always enough, and they are every risky. Visit a specialist who not only has the necessary technology but the best cure at his/her disposal. If you see any issues like blurry vision, spots and other stuff occurring, don’t resort to carrots, but visit a doctor as soon as possible.
Don’t Have Too Many
Again, too much carrots can be very unhealthy for your body. Skin turning orange may be a phenomenon you have to deal with if you consume too many carrots. Also remember, don’t blame the carrots if your eyesight isn’t perfect. Most eyesight related problems arise from genetics, diabetes or aging. So do not assume that your eyesight will boast of the most pink of health just because you’ve binged on carrots.
Overall, carrot juice is a healthy component of a balanced diet and consuming it in moderation is a good habit worth cultivating. Encourage yourself and people around you to have it. So go get your juicers ready and prepare another round of delicious carrot juice!
