“We shall never know all the good that a simple smile can do.”— Mother Teresa. ?
[dropcap]T[/dropcap]his simple innocent, smile adds that poetic touch when life turns prosaic. Adding smiles to my life is not a difficult task for me as my small world consists of nothing but sheer grin. I very well know how to bring forth those priceless expressions on the faces of my kids. But when I seek the same smile on that face which is around me, as a part of my small world, yet deprived of such expressions, it becomes rather a difficult task for me.
Though she is antonymous to smiles, yet she adds smiles to my world by making it comfortable with her hard work and sincerity. Let me introduce her to my readers first. She is Seema, my 17 years old domestic help who was born and being brought up in an HIV positive family. Her truck driver father died of AIDS in Mumbai about 10 years back when her mother was expecting her 6th daughter. Later, her mother and the new born baby both were detected HIV positive. Life turned out to be perdition for them as no one did offer work and bread to them.
When Seema was brought to our house for work, even we sent her for a blood-test despite knowing the fact that HIV is not a communicable disease (a harsh reality but sadly true). She came out clean (HIV negative) and was accepted in our family. From that day till date, she hardly smiles in front of me. But she is quite candid in front of my daughters, as they are of her age and make her life comfortable as well as easy with their share of smiles. According to them Seema’s occasional smiles are though demure, yet very widespread, vibrant and striking. Her squeaky clean white teeth shine bright against her dusky complexion and give new facets to her face.
But I am deprived of the smiles on that child’s face who often brings smiles on my face.—
- When she helps me managing my work and home so swiftly.
- When she cooks meals for the entire family in scorching hot summers while I’m not even able to enter into the kitchen.
- When she surprises me with her self-studies despite being handling all her household jobs.
- When she brings a glass of water to me without even asking (which I direly need).
In short, Seema is my lifeline, without whom I can’t handle my home as well as my work.
But I feel bad seeing her moving with a serious face all the time around.
So, I planned to bring a smile on her face and McCain helped me in that respect.
How I cooked a smile the very McCain way!
Today’s recipe was solely cooked for the cook of the house, without letting her know what’s cooking. It was not at all a difficult task to put through those smiles from the frying pan to the platter. I simply took them out from the freezer and threw them into the frying pan without even thawing them. These McCain smiles are sheer delight— a sumptuous delicacy that is easy to cook and tastes divine.
Seema smiled the moment she saw the platter full of smiles and I was happy seeing that priceless expression on that kid’s face, for whom, it’s a rare feeling which was hidden beneath the cruel feet of a fatal disease. And finally, I could witness that precious emotion on her face that was instant, pure and flawless. But, this time that smile was not as transient like earlier. It lasted longer till the time she finished her plate and enjoyed the taste of McCain smiles.
I’ve tried to bring a smile on her face
Where destiny had left its trace!
She’s deprived of many good things in life
Yet, has learnt to live it with a grace!
Though she yearns to be with her family
But works and earns for their solace,
The ice in her heart was melted with McCain,
And I put a smile on her face! 🙂
