Ars Poetica (The Art of Poetry): A Sonnet
When heart bleeds Aqua Regia
Solvates your inner space
When Brine is tinged with liquid pain
Which sets papers ablaze.
When soul cracks in screeching silence
There’s bloodcurdling solace
Then poems write themselves with pain
Pen scrolls mere roses, lace.
When agony drills you deep down
Yet, you don’t show its trace
When pain seeps in, poems spill out
It aches what you embrace.
Art’s as pure as the driven snow
Finesse adds to its grace.

Unlike a classic Shakespearean sonnet written in ‘Iambic Pentameter‘, I have written this sonnet with a specific rhyme and rhythm pattern using the Common meter often used in lyrical poetry, especially in Christian hymns and Wordsworth’s Romantic Poetry. The common meter, which is also called the “Ballard meter” alternates between lines of eight syllables and of six syllables alternately, and it always follows an iambic stress pattern in which each unstressed syllable is followed by one stressed syllable. My Sonnet also follows a balladic rhyme scheme of ABCB.
“Ars Poetica“(Latin), meaning “the Art of Poetry“, is a poem written by Roman lyric Poet Horace in which he advises poets on the art of writing poetry and drama. The Ars Poetica had a great influence in later ages on European literature, especially on French drama, and has inspired poets and authors since its origin. Although it’s well-known since the Middle ages, it has been used in literary criticism since the Renaissance.
I have written many sonnets on various feet and forms in the past and posted some of them on the blog. You can check the previously posted Sonnets, here as well…..
