Google says it’s World Saree Day today.
So, how can we, the women, remain deprived of flaunting our pictures? Right? But, what if I share some old-school GYAN about this sensuous trail of cloth that has been an integral part of a women’s persona for eons? And, I bet no one would ever tell you such malarkey except me. That’s because once upon a time I had an old head on my young shoulders and even today I barge on the same when I am getting old and my love for Sarees escalates by leaps and bounds.
So, what are the Hot and Cool elements attached to a saree? Read my Sartorial saga of Style and Sensuousness folded neatly along with the graceful pleats of a saree.
Saree is indeed the most breezy attire a woman needs during hot summer days and the warmest during winters.
What we seek in summers to cool ourselves are the two cooling agents of nature— the elements of water and air. And a saree surely incorporates these two basic ‘tattvas’— the ‘Jal tattva’ (water element) and the ‘Vayu tattva’ (air element). The pallu of a saree that flows fearlessly expresses the free-flowing spirit of the air. Whereas, the drape covering the entire body from head to toe comprises the spirit of water as if a woman emerges through water and is completely drenched.
The age-old ancient idea of a seamless piece of clothing itself has arrived from the cool elements of air and water. In The Mahabharata, when Draupadi sought help from Lord Krishna to save her from Dushasana, Krishna himself evoked Varuna (water God) and Vayu (wind god) to enhance Draupadi’s saree to endless lengths. So, it’s the proven Mythological fact that saree is the coolest attire.
Nonsense! Isn’t it? To all intents and purposes. Actually, in ancient times, women were forced to wear complicated outfits to restrict their mobility and vigor. The idea was to make them easy prey to Patriarchy. Quite akin to a leash! Much of a muchness. Drape it, fasten it, clasp it and you are ready to be trapped. Draped to be the Predator’s Prey. Ain’t it?
But, women are women! Invincible indeed. We made our leashes as enduring as earth, as free as air, as movable as water, sensuously hot as fire, ethereal as the sky. The reason, when all the feminine attires lost their charm and utility during the evolution, Our Saree still survives. We survive despite all odds. We evolved within our Sarees. No Feminist movement made us burn it ever.
Saree is considered the most beautiful attire a woman adorns as it brings the best of beauty out of her.
Ethereal,
Compelling,
Womanly, playful,
Sensuousness wraps me
Yet I’m revealed in its folds.
Drapes the myriad moods of me
And I look at its many incarnations.
Moksha? Impossible…!
Dainty,
Astonishing,
Bewitching, beautiful,
Magnificence paints me
Yet I’m intrigued by its fads
Covers the dauntless spirit of me
And I adhere to its hasty emotions.
Mania? Possible…!
