31st of October, it’s Halloween today.
In Celtic religion, Halloween is observed as a harvest festival. Isn’t it like many of our harvest festivals like Makar Sankranti, Bihu, Pongal and many more? It’s a pagan festival marked with trickery, divination, pranks and feasts…quite alike our Holi, isn’t it?
In spite of coined from “Hallow”, the saints, Halloween is synonymous to scaring ghosts with cliché costumes and weird gestures. I don’t think any of our pagan festivals boasts scary elements the way Celtic traditions do. Because, we are way ahead of them.
We befriend our ghosts. We worship our dead in ‘Pitrapaksha’, a fortnight before Navratri. To us, death is not the ‘END’. It’s just the beginning, a step towards our salvation, the ‘Moksha’. Or, just the renewal of mortal elements The soul changes clothes and rebirths.
Life is inevitable. It never leaves even when we are dead.
Happy Halloween, happy Zindagi…
