Exuma, the district of the Bahamas is one of the most pristine places in the country. With over 365 cays, this islandic district lies beautiful with all its beautiful islands, crystal clear waters and sandy white beaches. But in spite of all of its beauty, Exuma remains to be one of the most untouched places in the Bahamas still now. You won’t find a single casino here, neither will you find any cruise ships within your sight. And if you are looking for an off the beaten path island experience far away from the crowds, then Exuma will be the perfect destination for you. Just book one of the luxurious Exuma house rentals and head over to this serene destination to experience one of the most peaceful and memorable vacation ever.
The islands of Exuma attract outdoorsy, adventurous people who like to move a bit away from the crowd and lose themselves among nature. Some of the cays of this pristine locality are also owned by celebrities. The colourful coral reefs, the lively marine populations, the endless stretches of beaches and the picturesque water make it a wonderful place for water activities as well as relaxing at the beach. With blue and sapphire waves and a very few people in your sight, Exuma will be one of the most different yet wonderful island vacations you have ever been on.
When to go
Exuma, just like other parts of the Bahamas, enjoys some beautiful weather all year around. Sunshine is abundant throughout the year, and the temperature stays moderate. The rainy season starts from June and continues till October, and it is advisable to avoid the place during these months. You will face a lot of storms and cloudy days if you visit Exuma during the rainy season. However, due to the humidity that is prevalent in the air during the summer months, travelers generally prefer to travel to this pristine location during the winter months. The weather stays dry and temperatures say balmy during those months. And that is why it is the best time to visit Exuma, in our opinion. As not many travelers travel to Exuma anyway, you won’t be dealing with heavy crowds even if you visit the islandic district during the peak season.
What to do
Spend time at the beaches
This will be the foremost thing that you will do while you are in Exuma. Exuma consists of over 365 cays, and all of them boast beautiful white sand beaches. And they are the whole point of visiting this place for a beach vacation, are they not? The beaches of Exuma lie beautiful with calm waters, friendly waves, gorgeous looking seashells and blue or green sea glasses. Spend your day relaxing at few of these beaches that Exuma has to offer. As the islands are not crowded at all, there is a high probability that you might find a beach all for yourself.
See the swimmimg pigs
A trip to Exuma can never be complete without seeing these cuties. You will have to visit the Farmer’s Cay in order to see and swim with the original swimming pigs. Exuma Water Sports, the best water tour operator in the Great Exuma, also have their own collection of these cute little pink swimming pigs. Most of the boat tours include some time with these cuties, and you should definitely not miss the chance of seeing these cute little animals.
Go for a swim with the stingrays
If marine animals are your kind of thing, then you would love to spend some time swimming with some stingrays. The best place to have this wonderful experience is the Chat ‘n’ Chill Bar on the Stocking Island. This bar has a number of ‘pet’ stingrays, which are very friendly in nature. Just get into the waist deep water and you will see a flock of stingrays swimming with you, begging for attention.
Experience the Sunday pig roast at Chat ‘n’ Chill
While you are on Stocking Island, it will be a crime to not experience the Sunday pig roast at the Chat ‘n’ Chill Bar. It is supposedly the best beach bar in all of Exuma, and almost everyone in Exuma turns up to this bar on Sundays for their mouthwatering pig roast. Enjoy the local buffet lunch which is served here and spend the rest of your day relaxing under the shadows of the palm trees while sipping on your Bahama Mamas.
Go island hopping
Most of the people who travel to Exuma stay at the Great Exuma, as finding accommodation and transport is much easier there. However, with over 365 cays lying within your reach, it will be a crime to not go and explore some of these islands. You can book a boat ride for the whole day and sail across the water to go island hopping while you are here. While exploring some of the most remote, less crowded and beautiful looking cays, you will also get to see cays which are owned by celebrities like Nicolas Cage, Faith Hill, David Tim McGraw and many more.
Visit Thunderball Grotto for snorkeling
Located near Staniel Cay, the Thunderball Grotto is probably one of the most popular attractions of Exuma. Famous as the shooting spot for several James Bond movies, snorkelling at this beautiful location is one of the must-do things while you are here. However, you have to be careful if you are going to snorkel on your own, as there is a strong current which pulls you into the grotto and it is quite difficult to get out.
Visit Compass Cay
Visiting Compass Cay to spend some time with their pet nurse sharks is another thing which you must do while you are in Exuma. The Nurse Sharks are the friendliest of all the sharks, and you get into the water for only $10 and have a swim with these wonderful creatures.
Take a trip to Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park
Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park is a nature preserve which stretches over 22 miles and includes a number of cays. It is home to some of the most wonderful snorkelling spots and nature trails what you can experience in the whole of Bahamas. Start your journey from Staniel Cay and explore this beautiful nature preserve in a day’s trip.
